What powers the 2022 Jeep Wrangler?
The Wrangler is available with three different engine options with varying levels of power and capability. Standard equipment is the highly-praised 3.6L Pentastar V6 that provides 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. With the available eTorque mild-hybrid technology, low-end torque is provided for smooth off-road crawling and impressive starts. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 is available on all four-door models for off-roaders looking for more power, offering 442 lb-ft of torque and 260 horsepower. The 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine gives drivers 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude trims are eligible for the 4xe powertrain, which pairs two electric motors with the 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine. This plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain supplies 56 MPG, 470 lb-ft of instant torque, and 375 horsepower. Lastly, the Rubicon 392 model is in a league of its own with a 6.4L HEMI V8 pushing out an enthralling 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to match! Besides the PHEV and V8 models, all Wrangler engines come standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic is available. Meanwhile, the PHEV and V8 only come with the TorqueFlite transmission.
Can you tell me about the Wranglers 4x4 systems?
Part of the reason the Jeep Wrangler is so legendary is because of its superior off-road capability. Most of which comes from the three available 4x4 systems. Standard equipment is Command-Trac 4x4. This part-time system lets drivers manually shift out of and into four-wheel drive at speeds up to 55 MPH while defaulting to two-wheel drive. Selec-Trac 4x4 operates similarly, but instead of drivers controlling the drivetrain, the system does it automatically with no driver input. Lastly, the Rubicon trim comes with Rock-Trac 4x4, another part-time system with a 4:1 crawl ratio in the transfer case. This transfer case gear ratio offers better traction during challenging off-roading situations. Two-wheel drive, 4-High, and 4-Low drive modes are available for all Wrangler 4x4 systems. Two-wheel drive saves fuel by sending 100% of the power to the rear wheels and should be used during ideal driving conditions like on dry pavement. When you come across snow or loose gravel, shifting into 4-High will give you greater traction, therefore, more confidence. 4-Low should only be used during low-speed off-roading conditions.
What else makes the Wrangler so capable?
Many features give the Wrangler its other-worldly off-road capabilities. First is the electronic disconnecting front sway bar. This disconnects the sway bar, allowing the front wheels to compress and drop further, making it easier to crawl over large trail obstacles. All Wranglers equipped with the automatic transmission come with Selec-Speed Control. This technology manages your speed while 4-Low is engaged. The engine's torque output and brake pressure are automatically applied to help drivers keep a safe speed while off-roading. The Off-Road+ button allows you to adjust your transmission shift points, throttle, and traction control to take on any trail that you're ready for. Standard for the rugged Rubicon trim is Tru-Lok electronic front and rear locking differentials. This prevents power from being sent to the wrong wheels while off-roading and evenly distributes power for top-notch traction.
